THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA

by Sensitive Choice

What is thunderstorm asthma?

Thunderstorm asthma is a potent mix of pollen and weather conditions that can trigger severe asthma symptoms in a large number of people over a short period of time.

Thunderstorm asthma may occur when a storm strikes on a hot and windy day during pollen season (early October – late December), when there are high levels of pollen in the air combined with a certain type of weather event.

When a storm front hits, the pollen grains absorb the moisture and burst into tiny particles. The thunderstorm winds blow the particles down to ground level, where they can be inhaled deep inside the lungs and trigger a serious asthma flare up.

Weather conditions like these can also lead to breathing problems being experienced not only by people with asthma but those who have seasonal hay fever. People who wheeze and sneeze with hay fever from pollens during spring are most likely to be affected, even if they have not been diagnosed with asthma before.

November 2016: Victorian Thunderstorm Asthma Event

On the evening of Monday 21 November 2016, Victoria experienced severe thunderstorm activity. The thunderstorm was followed by a thunderstorm asthma event, the likes of which in terms of size and severity was unprecedented. It resulted in thousands of people developing breathing difficulties in a very short period of time and placing increased pressure the ambulance service and hospital emergency rooms.

Who is most at risk of thunderstorm asthma?

Those at increased risk of thunderstorm asthma include people with both asthma and seasonal hay fever, as well as those with past or un-diagnosed asthma. People with seasonal spring hay fever who have never had asthma are also at risk.

Thunderstorm asthma can affect people living in metropolitan, regional or rural areas, even if they don’t have a history of asthma.

What are the symptoms of asthma and hay fever?

People with asthma may experience one or more of the following common symptoms:

  • Wheezing – a high-pitched sound coming from the chest while you are breathing
  • Breathlessness
  • A feeling of tightness in the chest
  • A persistent cough

A person’s asthma symptoms can vary over time – sometimes they will have no symptoms, especially when asthma is well-controlled – and symptoms often vary from person to person.

People with seasonal hay fever may experience one or more of the following common symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Itchy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy, watery eyes

Be prepared

The best way to treat thunderstorm asthma is to try and avoid it happening:

  • See your doctor about your hay fever and get a treatment plan sorted out in time for spring
  • If you have asthma or have experienced breathing problems, see your doctor for an asthma and lung health review
  • Take your regular daily asthma preventer medication, if you have been prescribed one
  • Ask your doctor for an up-to-date personal asthma action plan and follow it
  • Know the signs of worsening asthma and the asthma first aid steps
  • Always carry your reliever (e.g. Ventolin or Bricanyl)

What to do if a thunderstorm is forecast during pollen season

  • Always carry your blue reliever puffer with you and check that it is not empty or out-of-date
  • Make sure you take your regular daily asthma preventer and hay fever nasal spray, if you have been prescribed them
  • Close the doors and windows and, unless your air-conditioner has an effective pollen filter, make sure it is off or on recirculation mode
  • Avoid going outside just before and during the thunderstorm
  • Know the signs of worsening asthma and the asthma first aid steps
  • If you start developing any signs of asthma, follow your personal asthma action plan, if you have one, or the asthma first aid steps
  • If your asthma symptoms are rapidly worsening, call 000 and say you are having an asthma attack.

Ausclimate Back At Hornsby & Air Purifier Hot Tip!

AUsclimate Back at Hornsby

Ausclimate On-Location:
Jul 31-Aug 6: Westfield Hornsby Shopping Centre |
Aug 7-13: Erina Fair Shopping Centre |

Ausclimate are right back to it with a full schedule of on-location events coming up! But before that, we have a handy air-purifier tip for all of our Winix air-purifier owners out there.

We find ourselves giving this air purifier sleep-tip out all the time to our customers because it’s one that we use ourselves all the time at home. Our Winix air-purifiers do a great job running in the bedroom while you sleep, but to get even more bang for your buck, we recommend turning it on 30 minutes to an hour before bed time & adjusting it to “turbo-fan-speed” with the door closed. This will result in a quicker cleaning of the air before you come to bed & optimal air-purification efficiency for the night. Then when you are about to hop into bed, simply reduce it back to a quieter fan speed (such as medium or “sleep-mode”) for a lovely, restful night’s sleep!

After an amazing level of interest last time, we’ve decided to already make another visit back to lovely Hornsby, NSW. We already have multiple happy customers & friends of Ausclimate who are planning on coming back to see us again! We can’t wait to see everyone in Hornsby & help out with whatever mould, home moisture control or home air-quality issues that you may have. As always, we will have our full dehumidifier & air purifier range on display & will be more than happy to give out specific advice for new & previous customers & friends of Ausclimate alike. We want to make sure that you are always getting the most out of your dehumidifiers & air-purifiers. We’ll be located in Westfield Hornsby, nearby Coles & Kmart. See you there!

Ausclimate Latest Happenings & What’s Next!

Ausclimate On-Location:
Jul 17-23: Westfield Chatswood Shopping Centre |
Jul 31-Aug 6: Westfield Hornsby Shopping Centre |

That’s a wrap folks. It’s been a busy few weeks for Ausclimate, so we thought that we’d post a little wrap up of our latest happenings & tell you about what we have coming up next! We had just a great time at the Australian Health and Wellness Summit in Melbourne as well as at the Hornsby Westfield Shopping Centre in Hornsby, NSW. We met some great new Ausclimate friends at both events. Pete was just amazed at the amount of great conversations that he had throughout the day at the Australian Health & Wellness Summit.

“It was great to catch-up with the Founder of the Australian College of Environmental Studies & Building Biologist, Nicole Bijlsma at the Australia Health & Wellness event. We had some great chats & she did a wonderful job as a speaker at the event, she also also told me all about her exciting new book, ‘Healthy Homes 3rd edition’ which is due for publication soon. Nicole was able to give some great insight about Dehumidifiers & Air Purifiers role in making the home a healthier place. Looking forward to that new book!

I also finally got to catch-up with the founder of Chemical Free Community, Jillian Exton. We are so proud to be part of this great community who’s goal is to make it easier for families to lower or eliminate exposure to harmful chemicals as well as being a great support to chemical free local Aussie businesses. The Chemfree stand & seminar theatre was full of great ideas and advice to reduce toxicity in your life.

“Nicole, Jillian & everyone was just so nice! A truly great event all-round!” – Pete Higgins

Great job Pete! I also had a great time at Westfield Hornsby & met some incredible people. It was such a great time indeed, that we are set to make our return to Hornsby in just a few weeks on the 31st of July! But next up is Westfield Chatswood, NSW. Today is our first day & we’re raring to go! Come on down, we’re located nearby Coles.

As always, for all of our upcoming on-location events, please stop by, say gidday & see our full range of air purifiers & dehumidifiers in-person or ask us any questions that you might have on getting the most out of the Ausclimate products that you may already have. See you there!

Ausclimate on-location at Westfield Hornsby!

Ausclimate at Hornsby

Ausclimate On-Location:
Jun 26 to Jul 2: Westfield Hornsby Shopping Centre |
Jul 2: Australian Health & Wellness Summit – Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building

Today was our first day on-location at the Westfield Hornsby Shopping Centre, where we’ll be until Sunday. A beautiful bright & sunny day, as you can see by this incredible mobile water clock sculpture out front!

“Man, Time And the Environment” by Victor Cusak actually combines 3 ancient water-clock designs (Greek, Chinese & Swiss) and is pretty darned incredible to see in-person!

“This mobile water sculpture is a unique environmental statement, particularly relevant to Hornsby, an area retaining extensive unspoilt natural areas with abundant land & marine based flora & fauna. It’s symbolism is contrasting man’s historically joyful creativity with his rapidly increasing inability to coexist with virtually all forms of life on earth.”

So short on time & unable to get along with our neighbours; can’t we all relate to that!

If you are in the greater Hornsby area, please make sure to take a look at this beauty & stop by & say gidday to us inside! We’re located at the Woolies end of the centre, nearby Dan Murphys. Whether you’re thinking about a Dehumidifier or Air-Purifier purchase or would just like to have a chat about how you can keep getting the best out of your product, we’re here to help!
