Healthy Breathing Month: Dehumidifier Comparison Guide

Healthy Breathing Month Header

Hi there folks! We sure hope that you’ve found some of the content that we’ve shared so far this Healthy Breathing Month to be useful. Since Healthy Breathing Month is all about sharing handy resources, we thought it a great time to bring your attention to a guide that we’ve gotten some great feedback on in the past; our Compressor vs Desiccant Dehumidifier Comparison Guide!

As we’ve covered last time, the regular use of dehumidifiers (& removing excess moisture in your home) can be a key part of the equation when it comes to eliminating respiratory issue triggers & allergens. One of the first questions that we get from people thinking about a dehumidifier purchase is whether a Cool-Seasons Desiccant or a classic NWT Compressor Dehumidifier is going to be the right choice. So we put together this little guide to help you work out which might be right for you.

Compressor vs Desiccant:
an unbiased view (we sell both!)

Compressor dehumidifiers (also called refrigerant) have been used to dry out our homes for more than 40 years. Over this period, they have performed very well, building a reputation as a reliable energy efficient method of removing large volumes of excess moisture.

However, Desiccant-type dehumidifiers are also becoming quite popular in Australia.

So, how do you choose – ‘Compressor’ or ‘Desiccant’ dehumidifier?

In general terms, the Compressor dehumidifier still retains the position as top performer, particularly when the indoor temperature is around 20°C or above.

But if your indoor temperature is consistently below 20°c, then consider the Desiccant dehumidifier as a great option. They may be rated as having a lower overall moisture removal capacity, but they really do perform well at their rated capacity in those lower winter temperatures.

Compressor Desiccant Comparison Chart 5

Selecting the right model will depend on why you want to use it, when you use it, how you use it and where you live in Australia.

Why

Most of our customers purchase dehumidifiers to stop moisture related problems such as mould, dust-mites, condensation and musty odours etc.

Some of the issues are property related: protection of our valued and treasured possessions such as furnishing, clothing, footwear, camera equipment, electronics, etc.

Other issues are health related – a strong need to stop allergens such as mould and dust-mites before they grow, breed and then become airborne and affect our family’s health.

When

“When is the best time to dry the home – wait for winter”?

No, don’t wait for winter. Most homes get a build-up of indoor moisture through the summer and autumn months. So, we suggest you get started early; remove all that excess moisture in the warmer months and then do follow-up drying through your wetter/colder months of winter.

Having said that, some parts of Australia have wet summer months and dry winter months – keep reading for more help.

How

“How do you use a dehumidifier”?

You might be surprised that you do not have to run the dehumidifier every day to combat these common problems. Turning your dehumidifier on just once a week or so is generally enough to manage it. BUT, make sure to do the deep-down ‘structural’ drying first.

Where

So, now that we’ve discussed the WHY, the WHEN, the HOW, we can now help you decide the right type of dehumidifier for your area in Australia:

*Sydney, Northern NSW, WA, NT & QLD

An Ausclimate NWT Compressor type dehumidifier may be the preferred option for these areas because of high rainfall season of summer and autumn.

*As example: even though Sydney has its fair share of rain in winter, it’s often during the warmer wet months that moisture builds up in the home. Then, why do you notice the excess moisture in winter and not the previous months?

Why?… because, as it becomes colder we tend to close our doors and windows: therefore, trapping the excess built up of moisture inside the home. Once we turn the heater on, mould starts appearing, windows have condensation and that musty odour is back.

If you keep your home dry during the previous wetter months, it’s quite likely you won’t see such a problem the following winter.

Melbourne, VIC, Southern NSW, Tasmania & SA

An Ausclimate Cool-Seasons Desiccant type of dehumidifier may be the preferred option because these are typically cooler climates where the moisture problems are more confined to the winter months.

Generally, in the southern States, indoor room temperatures are consistently cooler than our northern neighbours: therefore, an Ausclimate Cool-Seasons Desiccant type dehumidifier may be the better option.

Others areas around Australia

The above regions all have areas that don’t fit nicely with the above options. There will be many areas where either Compressor or Desiccant or both may operate very effectively. Consider issue other issues such as local geography, elevation, bushland, shade, air movement, winds/breezes and of distance from the coast. These are all factors that influence your choice, including the architecture of your own home.

Also, it is important to note that it is the indoor room temperature and not the outside temperature that has a large bearing on selecting the right type of dehumidifier. Do you generally use a heater when operating a dehumidifier? Or would you consider using a Compressor dehumidifier with a heater option, such as the Ausclimate All-Seasons 35L Compressor Dehumidifier.

A fair bit to think about!

If you’re still not quite sure, make it easy for yourself & talk to an Ausclimate industry-expert.

Healthy Breathing Month: Dehumidifiers

Air Treatment Month Dehumidifier Tips Tuesday

When it comes to asthma and respiratory issues, the removal of ‘flare up triggers’ or ‘allergens’ can be a key part of the puzzle. Some key steps that are always good to keep in mind include; regular cleaning of your home, fresh air and cleaning the actual air in your home with a quality air purifier. While these steps are great, an issue that people often miss is the moisture levels in the home. Being Healthy Breathing Month, we thought that this would be a great time for a guide all about this issue of moisture in the home and keeping it under control with a quality dehumidifier!

Healthy Breathing Month:
Home Moisture & Dehumidifiers

Everyday moisture is one of the most common underlying causes for the many of the triggers affecting sufferers of asthma and other respiratory issues. These moisture levels can build up over time due to rainy weather, everyday condensation from showers, your washing, the dishes or even the very presence of people contributes to moisture levels in the air. Without comprehensive ventilation, these moisture levels can lead to conditions conducive to a range of well-known allergens/triggers such as mould, dust mites, cockroaches and a range of other nasties.

Regular use of a quality dehumidifier will actually remove this moisture from your air, helping to dry your home and eliminating those moist conditions & resulting triggers.

Ausclimate’s range of dehumidifiers will prevent/remove:

  • Mould growth: reduce the moisture levels throughout your home
  • Dust-mite breeding: reduce by drying out your mattress and carpet – they need dampness to breed
  • Dampness: attracts cockroaches, ants and a range of other nasties (cockroach droppings can also be potent allergens)
  • Condensation & water damage: often a problem during those cooler winter months (you’ll be surprised how easy the condensation disappears)
  • Musty smells: a definite sign you have excess moisture (let your dehumidifier get rid of this moisture and help freshen up the rooms)

Clothes drying:

In addition to this primary purpose, our dehumidifiers also work great as energy efficient clothes dryers. Very handy during dreary weather or for spaces with limited outdoor clothes drying options. More cost effective than the average clothes drying machine & no more shrunken clothes!

Picking the right dehumidifier:

We offer both dehumidifier technology options; the popular NWT ‘compressor’ range (great for a variety of temperatures), as well as the very effective Ausclimate Cool-Seasons ‘desiccant’ range (great for temperatures consistently 20 degrees and below).

The right size:

“Size is important”. A key consideration in dehumidifier selection is picking the right size dehumidifier for the job. The easiest measure of the strength of a dehumidifier is the amount of litres of water that it can remove in a day. Our NWT Supreme All Seasons model is our most powerful domestic dehumidifier removing up to 50 LITRES of moisture in just one day!

We are here to help

Please visit our website to find out all about our full dehumidifier range. For any questions or extra information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are only a call away! ph: 1800 122 100 (free call)

Healthy Breathing Month: Air Purifiers

Air Treatment Month Air Purifier Tips Tuesday
For those of us who suffer from asthma & other breathing issues, it’s a scary thought that the very air that we breathe can be a big part of frequent flare-ups. A top-quality air purifier can be an excellent option to clean the air in our homes and eliminate many of these triggers. We thought that Healthy Breathing Month would be a great time to share this little go-to guide about our WINIX air purifiers especially for those of us who suffer from respiratory issues.

Healthy Breathing Month: Air Purifiers

At it’s most basic, our WINIX air purifiers will actively remove asthma and allergy triggers from your air (airborne dust, mould spores, dust mites and VOCs are a few examples)

WINIX air purifiers will reduce/remove:

  • Airborne viruses and bacteria (filter harmful viruses, bacteria & other contaminants to protect the health of the young & elderly members of your family)
  • Unpleasant odours and VOCs (such as harmful chemical vapours & gases)
  • Pollens and other airborne particles (seasonal pollen & allergens can cause breathing problems, sneezing, itchy skin & sore eyes to sufferers of hay fever and asthma)
Our air purifiers also work great for all of the pet-lovers out there by removing pet hair and dander allergens from the air. They also do a great job of providing clean breathing air for our furry friends.
Our Ultimate 5-Stage WINIX air purifiers also feature air quality smart sensors that will automatically adjust the settings to suit the changing indoor environment

Winix Air Purifiers VOC Test Results

VOC Test Picture

Winix Air Purifier VOC Efficacy Test Results Are In

Ausclimate are extremely proud to share our recent independent VOC Testing Results for our Winix Ultimate 5-Stage Air Purifier, but firstly, just what are VOCs?

So what are VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that can easily enter the air in our home from many commonly used household products. The list of VOCs in your home seems endless. And yes, they’re everywhere: the materials used to build our home, plywood & wood products, carpets, soft furnishings, upholstered furniture, oil & solvent based cleaners, nail polish & other personal care products, adhesives & paints, aerosol sprays, even the vehicle emissions entering our homes.

We are commonly exposed to these VOCs by breathing, touching & swallowing. Just how harmful these are to our health is determined directly by:

  • The toxicity of the VOCs
  • The amount of VOCs in the air
  • The duration of exposure

Reducing our exposure can be achieved in a number of ways. And, whilst it may not be possible to totally remove these hazardous chemicals from our home, we can certainly take some steps to limit our exposure:

  • Ensure indoor areas are well-ventilated
  • Reduce the sources of VOCs where practicable
  • Use high quality air purifiers.

Winix Air Purifiers for VOC Removal

It’s well known that HEPA filter within the Winix Air Purifiers are designed to remove airborne pollutants in our homes, including those tiny particles of dust, mould, smoke, pollens, viruses and bacteria.

But the HEPA filter alone are not designed for VOC removal. It’s really the Winix ACTIVATED CARBON filter, as well as Winix PlasmaWaveTM technology that are the most important features when it comes to removing VOCs (such as formaldehyde & other dangerous chemicals).

VOC Independent Testing

Winix proudly state that the Winix Ultimate 5 Stage Air Purifier is in a field of its own when it comes to removing VOCs from the air in our homes. And there’s little doubt that the Activated Carbon filter, as well as Winix PlasmaWaveTM technology are responsible for these high-efficiency rates.

But, here in Australia, we wanted to go one step further, to have our own testing performed too – just to be sure!

So, we enlisted Melbourne-based indoor environment industry expert, Nicole Bijlsma (pictured), CEO of the Australian College of Environmental Studies to carry out independent VOC efficacy testing of our Winix Ultimate 5 Stage Air Purifier.

Nicole completed the VOC air testing in Bayswater, Melbourne in 2017 & had the samples analysed by Prism Analytical Technologies (USA).

VOC Test Results

Quite simply, the results were very clear:

In the official test, “The results indicate a significant reduction in Total VOCs from 98,000ng/L to 20,000 ng/L which equates to an almost 80% reduction of total VOCs within one hour of the air purifier being in use.”*

This is a great result that leaves us wondering, ‘If this is so effective in only one hour, can you imagine how effective it is in cleaning the air in a room all day long?!’

What these VOC test results mean for you

We’ve already established that there are more potentially hazardous chemicals in our homes than we want to even think about! From everyday household cleaners, to furniture materials, to common glues, paints & plastics found in the home; even experts have little knowledge on their potentially long-term & dangerous effects on human health.

Nicole Bijlsma notes that “Outdoor air pollution kills more people in Australia than the road toll, and indoor air quality is up to five times more polluted than outdoor air” (BITRE, 2017; OECD, 2014; US EPA, 2017). …“The Ausclimate air purifier was shown to reduce the chemical load in indoor air by 80% within an hour of use.” (ACES, 2017)

Simply put, these results prove that Ausclimate’s Winix Ultimate 5 Stage Air Purifier will actively remove many of these airborne chemicals straight out of the air in our rooms, as effectively as 80% in one hour! In the big picture, these results are just great news for people with chemical sensitivities (or just wanting to reduce their chemical exposure) because this is real evidence that our Winix Ultimate 5 Stage Air Purifier can effectively protect you & your family from many of these everyday chemical nasties that are found in the common home.

* Testing results provided by the Australian College of Environmental Studies via Prism Analytical Technologies, Inc., the creator of IAQ Commercial Survey. Prism has been performing air quality assessments to industry and environmental consultants since 1995. IAQ Commercial SurveyTM is one of the most advanced, trusted air testing products on the market today for identifying chemical sources and active mould growth. Model tested: Winix Ultimate 5-Stage Air Purifier (AUS-9500). Detailed testing results available on request.

Thank you, we hope that this information & test results have been helpful & as always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
